Summary

An agent using this skill can identify and quantify the impact of Google AI Overviews on search traffic by analyzing the decoupling between impressions and clicks, locating affected keywords, and delivering a diagnostic report that reframes declining clicks within structural market changes rather than content failures.

Diagnose and report on search traffic decoupling from AI Overviews

When to Activate

  • User reports declining clicks despite stable or increasing impressions in Google Search Console
  • User asks why their "GSC chart looks like a crocodile mouth" (impressions up, clicks down)
  • User requests analysis of AI Overview impact on their search performance
  • User needs to audit which keywords are affected by the great decoupling phenomenon

Core Knowledge

The decoupling mechanism: AI Overviews create a fundamental shift in how impressions and clicks relate. Previously, clicks and impressions moved together (positive correlation). Now they move in opposite directions (negative correlation).

Two simultaneous forces cause this:

  1. Impression inflation: Multiple URLs can now share impressions for a single keyword when cited in an AI Overview (previously only one URL received impressions for a #1 ranking)
  2. Click suppression: AI Overviews answer queries directly on the SERP, creating zero-click searches. Data from 300,000 keywords shows AI Overviews correlate with a 34.5% reduction in clickthrough rate.

Important nuance: Google's John Mueller confirmed that being cited in an AI Overview does NOT give you two separate impressions (one as a traditional blue link, one as an AI Overview citation). You only receive one impression total, similar to appearing in both image results and traditional results.

Timeline correlation: The decoupling accelerated alongside the March Core update, when AI Overview presence doubled (116% increase). For Ahrefs blog specifically:

  • Late 2024 (6 months): clicks and impressions showed positive correlation of 0.425
  • Early 2025 (6 months): correlation flipped to negative -0.352

Validation check: Sites with very few AI Overviews do not show the crocodile mouth pattern. This confirms AI Overviews as the primary driver.

Constraints / Hard Rules

  • Do not attribute declining clicks to content quality issues or SEO failures without first checking AI Overview presence
  • Do not assume the pattern will reverse—AI Mode may become the default search experience, making this permanent
  • Do not rely on traffic growth as the sole business health metric; conversion data matters more (visits from AI search can convert 23x better than traditional search)
  • Do not filter to AI Overviews where the domain is cited without also checking organic top-10 rankings—you need overlap to identify double-duty keywords

Workflow

1. Confirm the decoupling pattern exists

  • Access Google Search Console data for the site
  • Calculate correlation between clicks and impressions for two recent 6-month periods
  • Look for shift from positive to negative correlation
  • Visually inspect for "crocodile mouth" pattern (diverging lines)

2. Identify affected keywords in Ahrefs Site Explorer

  • Navigate to Organic keywords report
  • Apply filters:
    • SERP features: "AI Overview"
    • Position: 1-10
  • Export the resulting keyword list
  • Note the total count of keywords triggering AI Overviews where the site ranks top 10

3. Find citation keywords using Brand Radar

  • Access Ahrefs Brand Radar (AI visibility tool)
  • Filter to AI Overviews that include a link to the site's URL
  • Export this list
  • Note the total count of keywords where the site is cited

4. Identify double-duty keywords

  • Cross-reference the two lists from steps 2 and 3
  • Keywords appearing in BOTH lists are "double-duty": they rank in traditional results AND get cited in AI Overviews
  • These are the primary decoupling culprits (high impressions from both sources, suppressed clicks from AI Overview answering the query)

5. Quantify the impact

  • For double-duty keywords, pull historical GSC data showing:
    • Impression trends
    • Click trends
    • CTR trends
  • Compare performance before and after AI Overview rollout (use March Core update as approximate inflection point)

Output Contract

Deliver a diagnostic report containing:

  1. Decoupling confirmation: Correlation coefficients for two time periods, visual chart showing the pattern
  2. Keyword inventory:
    • Total keywords with AI Overviews where site ranks top 10
    • Total keywords where site is cited in AI Overview
    • Specific list of double-duty keywords with highest impression volume
  3. Impact quantification: Before/after comparison showing impression increase % and click decrease % for affected keyword set
  4. Business context: Note that declining clicks don't necessarily mean declining business value—include conversion rate comparison if available (AI search traffic vs. traditional search traffic)
  5. Recommendation: Adjust traffic growth targets to account for structural CTR suppression, shift focus to conversion metrics over raw traffic volume

Do not include: Generic SEO recommendations, content improvement suggestions, or technical fixes. This is a diagnostic skill for understanding and reporting a platform-level change, not an optimization skill.
