Technical Details
This skill uses Reddit's public JSON API, which requires no authentication. All endpoints return JSON when .json is appended to the URL.
API endpoint:
https://www.reddit.com/search.json?q={keyword}&sort=new&limit=25&t={time_filter}
Important:
- A User-Agent header is required for all requests
- Rate limiting: Maximum one request every 2 seconds
- Results are limited to 25 per request by default
- Time filters: hour, day, week, month, year, all
Engagement Guidelines
Reddit values authentic participation over marketing. When responding to opportunities found by this skill:
- Provide genuine value first - Answer the question fully before mentioning your product
- Disclose affiliations - Be transparent about your connection to any product
- Respect subreddit rules - Each subreddit has its own self-promotion policies
- Follow the 10% rule - No more than 10% of your activity should be self-promotional
- Build karma first - Establish credibility through helpful contributions
Best Subreddits for SaaS
| Subreddit | Focus | Self-Promo Rules |
|---|---|---|
| r/SaaS | SaaS discussion | Allowed with value |
| r/startups | Startup community | Limited, must add context |
| r/Entrepreneur | Business building | Moderate |
| r/smallbusiness | Small business | Moderate |
| r/marketing | Marketing strategy | Strict |
| r/SEO | Search optimization | Moderate |
| r/webdev | Web development | Tool recommendations OK |
| r/artificial | AI discussion | Tool sharing OK |
| r/ChatGPT | AI tools | Recommendations welcome |

API Integrations (Optional)
This skill works out of the box with Reddit's free public JSON API. However, the free API has strict rate limits (1 request per 2 seconds) which can cause timeouts or incomplete results for broad searches.
If the user provides their own API credentials, use them for higher rate limits and richer data.
| Environment Variable | Service | What It Unlocks |
|---|---|---|
REDDIT_CLIENT_ID + REDDIT_CLIENT_SECRET | Reddit OAuth API | 60 requests/minute (vs 1 per 2 seconds), access to more results per query, comment-level search |
How to set up:
- Create a Reddit app at
https://www.reddit.com/prefs/apps - Select "script" as the app type
- Set the environment variables:
export REDDIT_CLIENT_ID="your_client_id" export REDDIT_CLIENT_SECRET="your_client_secret"
Behavior:
- If
REDDIT_CLIENT_IDis set ā Use OAuth API with higher rate limits - If not set ā Use free public JSON API (current default behavior, no change)
When results are limited: If a search returns fewer results than expected, hits a rate limit, or times out, inform the user that optional API credentials can improve results. Example:
ā ļø Reddit rate limit reached - retrieved 12 of ~50 potential results. For higher limits (60 req/min), set
REDDIT_CLIENT_IDandREDDIT_CLIENT_SECRET. See the API Integrations section in this skill's SKILL.md for setup instructions.
